What Did Your Fridges Do on the Long Weekend?

The King’s Birthday long weekend has been and gone. Hopefully you closed the doors, switched off your phone and enjoyed a well-earned break. Most chefs I know don’t get many of those.

But one question you may ask when you come back: what were your fridges doing while you were away?

24 hours is a long time for a coolroom

When your kitchen is open, someone is in and out of the coolroom all day. If a door doesn’t seal or a fridge starts running warm, (hopefully) someone notices. When you’re closed for a long weekend, nobody is there to notice.

A compressor that gives up. A power trip. A door left slightly ajar. Any one of these can mean opening up on Tuesday to warm shelves, spoiled stock and a hard decision about what goes in the bin.

That’s money lost, a stressful morning and sometimes dishes you can’t serve. And if you’re still using paper temperature logs, there’s a gap in your records for every day the kitchen sat empty.

The technology exists, so why isn’t everyone using it?

Wireless temperature monitoring solves this problem. Sensors in your fridges, freezers and coolrooms record temperatures around the clock and send you an SMS the moment something moves out of range. You find out immediately, not Tuesday morning, while there’s still time to call a technician or move your stock.

So why doesn’t every kitchen have it? In my experience, it isn’t the cost. It’s the confusion.

Every week there seems to be a new monitoring app advertised, full of promises about AI, dashboards and the cloud. If you’re an owner or a chef, you’re left wondering which sensors to buy, how to set them up and whether it will keep the inspector happy. Many of these products are designed to be bought online and installed yourself. When something goes wrong, your support is a help-desk ticket or a chatbot.

So it goes in the too-hard basket, and the paper log stays on the coolroom door.

A real person who’s been doing this for 20 years

That’s the part I take care of. For 20 years I’ve been helping kitchens across South East Queensland protect their stock and stay on top of food safety. I don’t sell you a box and leave you to work it out.

I come out to your kitchen, look at what you’ve got and recommend the right setup. I install the sensors, get your digital food safety records running and show your team how it all works. Then I keep an eye on your temperature records and let you know if a fridge isn’t running as well as it should.

And when an alert comes through and you’re not sure what it means, you don’t need to raise a ticket. You can pick up the phone and talk to me.

Make your next day off a real day off

The Christmas and New Year shutdown is only a few months away. For many kitchens, it’s the longest stretch of the year with nobody on site. Now is a good time to get monitoring in place, so it’s tested and running smoothly well before you lock up for the holidays.

If you’d like to know what would suit your kitchen, give me a call on 0415 168 729 or get in touch through envirochill.com.au. No jargon and no pressure, just a chat about making sure your next long weekend ends with a relaxed Tuesday morning, not a disaster.
