Why Shortcuts Cost Lives

From Food Safety to Vehicle Technology

I read a report this week that revealed 20% of drivers were turning off key vehicle safety warning features because they’re “too annoying or too sensitive”.  Despite clear evidence that proper precautions save lives, many still take dangerous shortcuts. An analysis of insurance claims showed that Advanced Driver Assistance Systems are significantly less likely to be involved in accidents.

So what does advanced driving technology have to do with Food Safety?

Quite a lot actually!  I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve been asked:

* Can we turn off the notifications;

* Can we just go back and enter the data later;

* The alerts are too sensitive, can you change that?

In both situations, the technology is there to save lives, yet people still want to cheat the system.  Then what happens – someone gets injured, and in both cases, the results can be fatal.

Only recently, there have been international reports where two people died from toxic guacamole, 400 children suffered food poisoning from school meals and five people were hospitalised with botulism, just to name a few serious incidents.

In Australia alone each year, over 4.7 million people suffer food poisoning, leading to about 47 900 hospitalizations and 38 deaths each year.

Embracing Safety Instead of Evading It

Both food poisoning outbreaks and crash data demonstrate a hard truth: cutting corners can cost lives. Here’s how businesses and individuals can shift the needle:

  • Invest in rigorous training. Teach staff to use food‐safety systems to protect their customers
  • Standardize and simplify. Use technology to provide consistent, user-friendly instructions
  • Monitor and reinforce. Regular audits of food-handling practices can be automated to identify gaps before they become tragedies.
  • Lead by example. Managers who prioritize safety—visible adherence to checklists in the kitchen set the tone for teams.

Ultimately, technology is only effective when we trust, learn and use it as it is intended. Let’s commit to processes that protect our customers, employees, and communities, rather than bypassing proven safeguards.
