5 Main Threats to Cold Rooms

When you have a cool storage unit or cold room, you need to be aware of threats to the safe and sanitary conditions of these spaces. So, to help you out, our cool room cleaning team have complied a list of the five main threats to cold rooms.

Mould

Due to the excess moisture in the air, cold rooms are prone to infestations of mould and mildew. This can infiltrate your cooling and refrigerant systems and then spread to surfaces throughout your cool room. Not only is this unhygienic, but it can result in unpleasant odours and unsightly spotting.

Yeast

Just like mould, yeast can accumulate in your cold room and threaten the sterile conditions. If left unchecked, yeast can spread throughout your cooling systems and surfaces. Many cleaning agents that kill bacteria also have anti-fungal properties that get rid of yeast.

Ethylene

Commonly known as the ripening hormone, ethylene is an odourless gas responsible for plant growth and death. Different fruits and vegetables have different levels of ethylene production and sensitivity, so you need to be mindful which goods you store together. Too much ethylene trapped in your cool room will result in rapid decay and spoiling of fresh produce.

Bacteria

Bacteria has grown almost everywhere and cold room is no exception. Overtime bacteria build up in cool room and compromise the safety of your storage spaces. It’s important that you regularly clean your store room with anti-bacterial agents to prevent bacteria from spreading.

Temperature

When it comes to cool rooms, a balanced temperature is key. In Australia food safety regulations dictate that cold rooms must keep food chilled at no more than 5 degrees. Any food that exceeds this temperature in storage is in the danger zone and is no longer safe for eating.
